ATHOL – Local author JA McIntosh will present her new book, “Grampa Leary”, at the Athol Public Library on Saturday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. “Grampa Leary” is the third book in her Meredith, Massachusetts series. Ms. McIntosh will discuss ‘How (Not) to Write a Novel’, a brief history of her mistakes and lessons learned on the way to publication. She will also read short sections of her new novel and there will be food, fun and prizes.
Gabe Leary and his wife, Freya, are raising their great-granddaughter, while trying to deal with the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of their granddaughter, Stella. Gabe is questioned as a suspect in Stella’s death, and family members argue over who is best suited to take care of the children. “Grampa Leary” explores family complications, especially when mixed with murder.
Ms. McIntosh is living her dream life as a rural mystery writer. The first novel in the Meredith, Massachusetts series, “Niagara Fontaine,” was published in 2018, followed by “Judge Hartwell” in 2020. All three books will be available for sale after the presentation.
“I’m fascinated by the concept of justice and what it means to different people, or even the same person in different circumstances,” McIntosh said. “When people talk about themselves or their loved ones, they often apply different standards to those applied to strangers. No one is perfect, but the stories are compelling.
The library is at 568 Main St. This event is free, but pre-registration is encouraged by calling 978-249-9515. Athol Library has scheduled a variety of in-person events throughout the spring and summer, including gardening workshops and other local authors.
