Author and former Daily Press reporter to sign new book on Newport News shipbuilding and its workers – Daily Press


The author of a new book about Newport News shipbuilding workers will sign copies of the book at two local Barnes & Noble stores on Saturday.

Michael Fabey wrote “Heavy Metal: The Hard Days and Nights of the Shipyard Workers Building America’s Supercarriers”, published by HarperCollins.

Fabey, 59, from Spotsylvania County, covered Newport News’ shipbuilding and defense industry for the Daily Press from 2000 to 2004. He is currently the US editor of UK-based Jane’s Fighting Ships. United.

The book tells the story of shipyard workers – from welders to electricians to machinists and many other trades – as they build aircraft carriers at the Newport News yard.

“Heavy Metal places us on the waterfront and in the lives of these men and women as they battle layoffs, the elements, impossible deadlines, extraordinary pressure, workplace dangers and a pandemic for complete a ship that will be essential to protecting the American way of life. life,” according to the book jacket.

The first signing will be from 1-3 p.m. at Barnes & Noble at 12170 Jefferson Ave. at Newport News. The second will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Barnes & Noble at the Peninsula Town Center, 5100 Kilgore Ave. in Hampton.
