FORMER Oldham loan star Jonny Smith has joined League One Swindon on a season-long loan.
This will be the 23-year-old’s fifth loan spell away from Bristol City having played for Cheltenham, AFC Fylde and Tranmere before spending 2019/20 with Latics.
The winger, who has yet to make a senior appearance for the Robins, scored nine goals in 28 appearances at Boundary Park to become a real hit with supporters.
He now moves into the third tier with a side that were crowned Ligue 2 champions in a season cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Elsewhere, another former Latic will line up against Oldham next season after Dean Furman signed for Carlisle.
Returning to England after a stint in his homeland with SuperSport United, 56-cap international Bafana Bafana spent time on trial with the Cumbrians before signing a one-year contract.
Furman made 131 Latics appearances before leaving for Doncaster in 2013.
“This one could be a great signing for us, and I’m delighted we managed to pull it off,” Carlisle manager Chris Beech said.
“He’s such a smart footballer, with the ability to dictate a game, and he adds leadership and maturity to that area of the pitch.
“Dean will help one hundred percent to improve our other midfield players through the application of his work, and that’s a huge plus for me. We have real talent in the building and I’m delighted to see those progress.
“Dean is one of the oldest players we’ve signed this summer at 32, he’s usually the young energy we go for, but nevertheless he’s in fantastic form, in super form. He’s a great pro with a good attitude and I can’t wait for him to make us even better.
