Gruff Rhys announces ‘Seeking New Gods’ (watch the video “Loan Your Loneliness”)

Gruff rhys is back with his sixth solo album, In search of new gods, which will be released on May 21 via Rough Trade.

In search of new gods began as a biography of the active East Asian volcano, Mount Paektu, but as he investigated his song ideas became more personal, picking up on themes he has since explored in less “Slow Life” from Super Furry Animals. “The album is about people and civilizations, and the spaces people inhabit over time,” says Gruff. “How people come and go, but the geology stays and changes more slowly. I think it’s a matter of memory and time. It’s still a biography of a mountain, but now it’s a Paektu mountain. You won’t learn much about the real mountain from listening to this record, but you will hopefully feel something.

The first single from the record is “Loan Your Loneliness”, a super catchy and glamorous song about a “solo guitarist accidentally inventing color television”. Check out the video for the single below.

Always a technology innovator, Gruff is working with the BBC’s R&D department to “use their Audio Orchestrator technology to create an immersive home and multi-device listening experience for fans.” Stay tuned for more details on that and check out the album art and track list below.
