The famous unconventional men’s magazine ranked Helen as one of America’s best new restaurants. Getting to number three is the classic Birmingham dining experience: Helen. This is a big deal! Read on to find out why this is topical.
What is Esquire?
Men’s magazine, Esquire, is known for its unconventional topics and well-researched guides. Recently, they rated Helen as one of the best new restaurants. Why is this important? Esquire writers have traveled and ate all over the United States to find the best of the best.
As they traveled across America on a culinary journey, this magazine became drawn to foods prepared with that taste of fire and charcoal. Helen, with her hardwood and charcoal smoked foods, fits perfectly into their palette.
FUN FACT: Birmingham restaurant Automatic Seafood & Oysters has already been on the new restaurant list.
Two notable Esquire writers from Alabama include:
- Truman Capote (yes, the author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
- Gay tale

At the contemporary South Birmingham Grill, you will no doubt be stunned by the menu. They love to change things up at Helen’s so you’ll never see the same menu twice! But you can expect your grandma’s best steak and the ultimate sides.
Run by Chef Rob McDaniel and Emily McDaniel, this chic restaurant brings memories of the kitchen back to life. Inspired by his grandmother’s charcoal grilling, Chef McDaniel aims to celebrate good food.
âThe chef describes the place as not being a steakhouse. âBut,â he said, âI want them to know we’re here.â They go. If not for the meat, then for the sides.
