When The kissing booth premiered on Netflix in 2018, it was the most-watched movie of that year. The following, The kissing booth 2, debuted on Netflix on July 24, 2020. Both films were based on books of the same name, by author Beth Reekles. Reekles was only a teenager when the first book was published, and now, at just 25, she has two films based on her books.
Beth Reekles originally uploaded the novels for online readers
Beth Reekles originally uploaded The kissing booth chapter by chapter on Wattpad. Wattpad is an online writing host website where authors can upload original works. Works can be downloaded in their entirety or published chapter by chapter as they are written. Reekles has chosen to publish his work chapter by chapter. Every few days she would download another chapter. Readers could comment on each chapter and leave comments.
It got to a point that Reekles couldn’t keep up with all the comments left, according to USA Today. Reekles said his opinions reached “tens of thousands”. In no time, she had millions of real views of her work on Wattpad. By the time she signed a three-book deal with Random House, her story had 19 million views.
She first published The kissing booth on Wattpad when she was 15. She was 17 when they were traditionally published. Penguin Random House made him sign a three-pound contract.
Reekles participated in the script writing process
Beth Reekles had phone calls with writer / director Vince Marcello during the process of adapting the books to the screen. She said she was far from qualified to write herself, but that she contributed to the story. Even when changes were made, Reekles didn’t care too much.
The kissing booth 2 had a big change from book to film, for example, Levi, the sensitive and sweet love interest, was replaced by Marco, a handsome and muscular love interest. Even with the changes, Reekles said she cried seeing the movie.
What author does not dream of seeing his book come to life on a screen? Reekles said it was exactly as she had imagined it in her head.
“The Kissing Booth” and its sequel are romances for young adults
The kissing booth stars Joey King as the main character Elle, along with Jacob Elordi and Joel Courtney. In the story, what starts out as a pretty innocent kiss in a kissing booth turns into a young love, with all the drama surrounding it.
The kissing booth 2 introduces a new character – Levi in the books and Marco in the movies – who is a love for Elle, and the story revolves around the resulting love triangle. She must make a choice between first love and new love.
The kissing booth 3 debuted on Netflix on August 11, 2021. During her last summer before starting college, She had a to-do list. There’s a trailer on IMDb, and it has most of the same characters and the same writer / director Vince Marcello.
The third film is based on the continuing story of Beth Reekle.
Beth Reekles still writes
Currently, you can find what Reekles is working on on Wattpad. She is working on a book called Lockdown on London Lane. This one is about a group of people living in an apartment building during coronavirus (COVID-19) closures and how they are dealing with them.
Reekles also wrote Out of tune and Roll the dice. We’ll likely see a lot more of Reekles in the future, whether she publishes on Wattpad or through more traditional means.
