Veteran, politician and activist Jason Kander has a new book on the shelves today. It’s sort of a departure from its previous title—Outside the wire– which dealt with the lessons he learned from his service in Afghanistan. The new version is a children’s book with a slightly less important subject. And it’s co-written by Kander’s son, True Kander.
Courage is … explores how much courage is in being afraid and doing the scary things anyway. Whether it’s going to the dentist, trying a strange new food, asking for help, or going to sleep on your own, this book discusses the many surprising ways to build courage and character. Kander and his son strive to demonstrate how these choices are inherent in who you are as a person, in actions large and small.
Illustrated by Alyssa Gonzalez, Courage is the work of a father who learned leadership through military service, through the lens of a child whose perspective will help lessons and perspective resonate with other children.
Jason Kander announced via Twitter that he has a book (for adults) on his consideration of post-traumatic stress disorder, scheduled for publication in 2022. But hopefully children will have access to future work by construction of characters from Kander & Kander.
Courage is … is published by Downtown Books and released by Simon and Schuster, and is available in bookstores now.
