The Bookseller – Rights – Headline edges out two thrillers from first author Tate in six-figure deal

Headline preceded two thrillers, Commit that body to the ground and a second, unnamed book, from first author AB Tate in a six-figure deal.

In her first acquisition since joining Headline from Bookouture, Deputy Publishing Director Lucy Dauman has secured UK and Commonwealth rights from Hayley Steed at the Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency. The Canadian rights were pre-empted overnight by Bhavna Chauhan at Doubleday Canada and it was sold to Anna Michels at Sourcebooks in the United States. The first title will be published in hardcover, e-book and audio in January 2024.

Commit that body to the ground is the perfect thriller – a stunning blend of tight plots, intoxicating characters and sumptuous prose, all wrapped with a spooky twist – and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the worldwide response to AB Tate’s debut,” said said Steed.

The novel takes place in a small town of West Wilmer reeling from the death of his beloved daughter, Phoebe Dean. As the memorial nears, the question haunting the town resurfaces: why did it take Phoebe’s brother and car driver, Grant, 27 minutes to call for help? Tate weaves the story through the eyes of four characters whose lives were forever changed by Phoebe’s death and slowly uncovers the truth about what happened that fateful night.

Dauman commented, “I couldn’t be more excited to make my first acquisition for Headline with this breathtaking debut album, a powerful and brilliantly written story of a community shaken by loss and characters struggling with trauma. from which they never recovered. I can safely say that sleep went out the window the moment I started reading, as I raced towards the unforgettable ending and a twist that knocked me over. It’s the very definition of an undeniable thriller, one that captivated me as much with the characters as it did with the richness of the atmosphere and the jaw-dropping tension, and I can’t wait to share it with readers around the world. entire.

Tate added: “It has been a dream come true to work with my agent Hayley Steed and I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the response from this brilliant team of writers. The grief of these four flawed characters is at the very heart of this novel and I hope their story of loss will resonate with readers. I look forward to introducing the world to this novel that means so much to me.”
