The circus performs Undertale music for the Pope

Since its release in 2015, Subtitle became a huge success, and the impact of the game continues to be seen in different ways. This continued on January 5, when Pope Francis was treated to a cover of the game’s track “Megalovania”, when the Rony Roller Circus staged a performance to the song written by Toby Fox! The Italian circus was invited as part of the Pope’s weekly general audience. Rony Roller performed on a number of different tracks, closing the show with Megalovania, naturally catching the attention of players around the world!

The performance at Megalovania can be seen in the embedded video below.

Interestingly enough, like The player underlines, this is not the first time that Pope Francis has met Subtitle! In 2016, YouTuber Matt “MatPat” Patrick gave the Pope a download code for the game during a Vatican Internet summit. It’s a safe bet that the Pope didn’t make the connection between the game and the song played during Wednesday’s performance, but that’s impossible to say for sure!

Since the performance, many Subtitle fans have responded with amusement to the Megalovania journey over the years! The track appeared in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2019 (alongside a Mii Fighter skin for Sans), and a month later, professional wrestler Kenny Omega stepped out on the track (dressed as Sans) in an episode of AEW: Dynamite. There aren’t many video game tracks that have had this kind of legacy, and that says a lot about Subtitlethe passionate fandom of, as well as the quality of the Toby Fox soundtrack. It remains to be seen where the song might appear next, but there’s a good chance it’s where fans least expect to hear it!

Subtitle is available now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC. You can check out all of our previous coverage of the game here.
